MOT stands for Ministry Of Transport. The government introduced this department in the 1960s to improve vehicle safety testing with regards to road worthiness and emissions. Strictly speaking, it is illegal without a MOT within the UK, however, there is one exception and that is when you have booked your test with an approved centre already or if you have been to a test centre and you car has failed the test. In these circumstances you have a grace period. Some of the vehicles that do not require a MOT are vehicles that are registered over 40 years ago and also have had no modifications done in the past 30 years.
